Alec Baldwin wishes he knew how to quit Twitter. And he's not alone.

Remember the time Alec Baldwin got in hot water over that Twitter tirade? No, not the rant about American Airlines kicking him off a plane for playing Words With Friends. Or when the incessant coverage of his wedding set him off on the micro-blogging site. We’re talking about the one just last week where Baldwin laid into a Daily Mail reporter for suggesting his wife was tweeting during James Gandolfini’s funeral. That time.
But we don’t blame you for losing track. This is Baldwin’s third Twitter dust-up — and the third time he’s stated publicly that he’ll never tweet again. Ever. “It’s just another chink in your armor for people to come and kill you,” Baldwin told Vanity Fair Tuesday. “I stopped and said to myself, ‘I’m going to try where I just don’t do this anymore.’”
And he’s certainly not alone. Let’s take a look back at the many celebs who have tried (and nearly always failed) to leave the blue bird behind.

James Franco
Why he quit: After getting flak for tweeting while he hosted the Oscars, Franco said his Twitter account began to cause problems and got “dangerous.”

Amanda Bynes
Why she quit: “If I don’t love something anymore, I stop doing it,” Bynes tweeted in June 2010. Though in that instance she was talking about acting, we can only assume the same applied to the social-networking site.

Miley Cyrus
Why she quit: “Liam doesn’t have a Twitter and he wants ME to delete mine with good reason,” she wrote as her farewell tweet, referring to now-fiancé Liam Hemsworth.

John Mayer
Why he quit: “I couldn’t have a complete thought anymore, and I was a tweetaholic.”

When he returned: He hasn’t, though his reps tweet from the official @johnmayer account.
Nicki Minaj
Why she quit: Minaj lost it when an unofficial fan site started leaking unreleased songs. “Like seriously, its but so much a person can take,” she wrote. “Good f–king bye.”

When she returned: January 2013
Chris Brown
Why he quit: Which time? He first left after accusing the industry of “blackballing” his Graffiti album following his assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna. The second time followed a profanity-filled tirade about why people were still focusing on that assault (sample tweet: “That sh– happened three years ago … people please grow up”). And he deleted his account one last time after a vulgar exchange with female comedian Jenny Johnson.
When he quit: December 2009, November 2011, and November 2012
When he returned: He came back every time, most recently in December 2012
So will Baldwin follow in John Mayer’s footsteps or fall back into the Twitter trap? We’ll have to wait and see.
